composer, educator, pianist
Michael Bies is a composer, educator, and occasional pianist who resides in Columbia, SC. His music has been performed around the country at festivals such as the Brevard Music Festival, Festival Miami, and the Frontwave Music Festival. As an educator, he has taught at Palm Beach Atlantic University, the University of South Carolina, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts where he is currently a visiting professor teaching theory courses to high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. Bies is also on faculty at the Saarburg Festival in Germany this summer where he is starting a composition program. He has participated in reading sessions with Brooklyn Rider, Imani Winds, and with cellist Craig Hultgren. Bies is currently a DMA Candidate in composition at the University of South Carolina. Outside of music, he enjoys preparing home cooked meals, brewing a good beer, collecting peanut butter on a fresh celery rib for consumption, and catching as many Syracuse Orange Basketball games as possible (Go Cuse!).
